What the iAVs Advocates Have Faced — and Why You Need to Help
They gave away a food-production breakthrough for free. The industry spent forty years trying to destroy them for it. This is what happened — and why you need to step up.

Imagine inventing a food-production system that uses 90% less water than conventional agriculture, produces two to three times the crop yield, requires zero chemical supplements, costs a few hundred dollars to build, and can feed a family of four year-round on the footprint of a parking space.
Now imagine spending the next forty years watching the industry you invented bury your work, harass your advocates, desecrate your dead friends, and redirect billions of dollars into inferior systems — all because your technology was too good, too cheap, and too open-source for anyone to profit from.
This is not a hypothetical. This is what happened to Dr. Mark McMurtry and the volunteers who have defended his Integrated Aqua-Vegeculture System (iAVs) for forty years. And unless more people step up to help, this story ends with the technology dying alongside its aging defenders.
Who Are the iAVs Advocates?
They are not a company. They are not a funded organization. They are not selling anything.
They are a small handful of volunteers — retirees, working people with day jobs, people in chronic pain managing their health — who have spent years of their lives maintaining the open-source documentation, defending the scientific record, and providing free technical support for a technology that was deliberately placed into the public domain in 1985 so that no one could patent it and restrict access.
The inventor, Dr. Mark McMurtry, forwent personal wealth to keep iAVs open-source. When North Carolina State University’s technology transfer office tried to sell proprietary rights to multinational agribusiness conglomerates in the late 1980s, McMurtry fought back — legally, publicly, and successfully. He made sure the technology would belong to everyone.
His reward for that ethical choice was a four-decade campaign of erasure, marginalization, and targeted harassment. The people who have volunteered alongside him have received the same treatment.
What They Faced: The Industry
The Academic Lockout
McMurtry developed iAVs at North Carolina State University between 1984 and 1990 with the support of 45 researchers across sixteen university departments, plus the USDA and NASA. The research produced five peer-reviewed publications documenting extraordinary results: tomato yields at 200-300% above commercial hydroponic benchmarks, fish feed conversion ratios of 1.2-1.3:1, complete nutrient mineralization without chemical supplements, and water-use efficiency orders of magnitude beyond conventional agriculture.
In June 1986, McMurtry offered his data and findings — gratis, as a professional courtesy — to Dr. James Rakocy, who was beginning construction of what would become the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) aquaponics program. The offer was, in McMurtry’s words, “summarily and indelicately refused.”
Rakocy built his system on a fundamentally different architecture: deep-water culture rafts with complex mechanical filtration that stripped out and discarded solid fish waste. This discarded sludge contained the phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and micronutrients essential for complete plant nutrition. Without it, the UVI system required continuous external chemical supplementation, 24-hour pump operation, and constant pH management.
The UVI paradigm became the academic standard. Funding flowed to raft-based research. University curricula taught the UVI model as “aquaponics.” McMurtry’s sand-based, zero-supplement, self-stabilizing system was excluded from the conversation entirely. Not debated. Not critiqued. Excluded.
The FAO Erasure
In July 1989, the NCSU Research Group wrote to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), providing detailed information about iAVs and its potential for food-insecure regions. Both USAID and the USDA had specifically advised them to approach FAO.
No response.
In September 1990, Dr. Doug Sanders, the iAVs Research Group Chair, traveled to FAO headquarters in Rome and presented the methodology in person. He felt he was heard. The content was well received. The NCSU team followed up repeatedly over subsequent years.
Nothing was ever heard from anyone associated with FAO.
Then, in 2014, FAO published Technical Paper 589 — a supposedly comprehensive textbook on aquaponics that became the definitive reference document for international NGOs, government grants, and university curricula worldwide. It completely omitted iAVs. No mention of sand-based systems. No reference to the NCSU research. No acknowledgment that the most thoroughly researched methodology in the field had ever existed.
The lead authors of FAO 589 included Moti Cohen, founder of LivinGreen — a commercial entity that profits directly from selling proprietary DWC and NFT systems. iAVs, which relies on generic, universally available sand and eliminates the need for the expensive equipment LivinGreen sells, was erased from the official UN literature by someone with a direct financial stake in its erasure.
The Political Assassination of a Humanitarian Project
On September 13, 1993, the day Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat shook hands on the White House lawn, NCSU received a call from the White House asking for Mark McMurtry. The NSA tracked him to a fishing trip in Yellowstone. He was flown to Arkansas — still in his fishing clothes — to present iAVs to the PLO Delegation, the State Department, USAID, Vice President Al Gore’s senior staff, and the World Bank.
The plan: deploy iAVs at scale at Jericho, accessing fossil groundwater beneath the Dead Sea. Feed a million people on 128 hectares. The World Bank proffered development funds in the billions. USAID and the World Bank committed to funding. The project had the support of the Vice President and the Senate Majority Leader.
Then the Israeli government learned of the plan. Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, became “vociferous in his extreme displeasure.” The message was unambiguous: if McMurtry and NCSU continued to pursue this project, “head’s were going to roll from the bottom (me) all the way to the top (Chancellor). Class dismissed.”
The project was killed. Not by technical infeasibility. Not by economic inviability. Not by scientific failure. It was killed by a U.S. Senator acting on behalf of a foreign government’s interest in preventing Palestinian food sovereignty.
The Commercial Siege
The global aquaponics equipment market was valued at over $1 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $2.3 billion by 2030. Every component of the dominant paradigm — separate biofilters, aeration systems, expanded clay media, nutrient supplements, monitoring hardware — generates revenue for an established supply chain.
iAVs requires sand, a liner, and a pump. That’s it. No ongoing supplementation. No external biofilter media. No proprietary monitoring hardware. No consulting required to manage instability, because the system is self-stable.
The industry’s response to this threat has been consistent and coordinated. Equipment suppliers don’t stock sand — they stock K1, expanded clay, and ceramic media. Course providers teach gravel-based systems because sand-based systems eliminate the need for their curriculum. Consultants recommend the products their supplier relationships depend on. Trade associations promote the systems their dues-paying members sell.
As one expose in the documentary record puts it: “Sand is the enemy of a recurring revenue model.”
Murray Hallam, an Australian aquaponics promoter who built a substantial commercial enterprise around gravel-based systems and course sales, was explicitly documented as having known about iAVs for decades. Despite knowing the sand-based system was “scientifically developed, documented and proven stable and highly productive,” Hallam “consciously decided to aggressively promote erroneous, unsubstantiated schemes to ‘milk’ his sycophants for all they were ‘worth’.” He is also the originator of the “silicosis myth” — the false claim that quartz sand would break down through microbial action and release toxic silica into the water, a claim that contradicts basic geochemistry but has circulated in aquaponics training materials for years, steering growers toward the expensive media that Hallam’s courses promoted.
What They Faced: The Harassers
The Fifteen-Year Digital War
The most sustained attack on the iAVs advocates came not from institutions but from an individual: Stephen Raisner, a commercial aquaponic cannabis grower operating under the entities Potent Ponics and the Open Nutrient Project. Raisner’s business model — selling external nutrient supplementation kits, proprietary biological inoculants, consulting services, and training classes — stands in direct existential opposition to iAVs’ premise that a properly designed system requires none of these things.
For over fifteen years, Raisner deployed a network of more than 100 aliases and sock-puppet accounts to:
Dismiss the NCSU research as “dead technology”
Claim that sand-based mineralization was “chemically impossible”
Harass, stalk, and doxx iAVs advocates — publishing their private information online
Create spoofed subreddits (r/scamponics, r/sandponicsiavs) to intercept people searching for authentic iAVs resources
Deploy the “firehose of falsehood” technique — overwhelming discussions with repeated false claims until participants exhausted themselves and left
Create a dedicated harassment subreddit specifically to slander iAVs proponents and mock the NCSU research
The rhetoric deployed by these accounts included referring to advocates as “stupid,” “idiotic,” “clowns,” “muppets,” “cultists,” “badtards,” and “corperate cucks.” The goal was attrition: to drain the emotional bandwidth of volunteer moderators until defending the open-source system became an exhausting, terrifying, and deeply unpleasant endeavor.
The Desecration of the Dead
The most egregious escalation was the targeted psychological cruelty directed at the memory of Gary Donaldson.
Gary Donaldson (1953–2021) was a foundational iAVs pioneer based in Australia. He spent years performing extensive data analysis to prove the resource efficiency, water conservation, and financial viability of iAVs over competing systems. He and McMurtry spoke via video messenger for several hours virtually every day for about seven years. Donaldson was the fiercest defender of the “Proven Form” of iAVs, arguing that unauthorized modifications set global agriculture “back into the Dark Ages.” He understood the humanitarian core of the project and insisted that iAVs “was never designed for middle-class puppies in need of a hobby” — it was engineered to put high-density nutrition into severely food-insecure populations.
After Donaldson’s death in 2021, Raisner’s harassment network engaged in the manipulation and desecration of images of the deceased pioneer. These attacks were calculatedly timed to coincide with the anniversaries of his death. The target was not just Donaldson’s memory — it was his widow, Jan, his surviving collaborators, and anyone who might consider volunteering to help the iAVs project.
This was not criticism of an agricultural methodology. This was emotional terrorism.
The Reddit Moderator Hypocrisy
On the primary aquaponics discussion forum (r/aquaponics), the moderation team enforced a stark double standard. When iAVs advocates pointed out the fundamental biophysical flaws of deep-water culture systems — the nutrient losses, the economic failures, the need for chemical supplementation — they were silenced, banned, or accused of not being “scholarly.”
Yet when mainstream users attacked iAVs advocates as “grifters,” accused them of running a “charade,” demanded expensive FOIA requests as a prerequisite for discussion, and made claims of “threats of violence,” the moderation team took no action, citing that they had “day jobs and cannot read every post.”
One iAVs advocate noted: “I’ve made a point to not post in the sub for months because I didn’t think I was welcome.” Another was literally ordered by a detractor: “Just don’t post this again” — in reference to a completely factual explanation of how sandponics works.
By defining factual critiques of the dominant paradigm as “bullying” while classifying the active harassment, slander, and bad-faith dismissal of iAVs science as standard discourse, the moderation team protected the commercial interests of the mainstream industry while actively fostering an environment that degraded and erased the pioneers of the field.
The Pseudoscientific Smear Campaign
The cologetmomo campaign, associated with Raisner’s network, published a lengthy article attempting to discredit the NCSU research. The article was analyzed point-by-point by the iAVs community and found to contain a systematic pattern of deception:
Deliberately misreading data tables — confusing nitrate (NO₃-N) with nitrite (NO₂-N) and building elaborate critiques on the confusion
Omitting context that changed the meaning entirely — presenting a 2.7 mg/L dissolved oxygen reading as system failure while omitting that the experiment was deliberately run without mechanical aeration to simulate conditions in West Africa
Misattributing causation — claiming 7% daily water loss was caused by evaporation when the published research itself identified the cause as liner punctures from deep experimental sampling probes
Calling standard scientific practice “lies” — characterizing annualized yield projections from measured weekly rates as “entirely fictional” and “totally hypothetical,” when this is the standard methodology used by every agricultural researcher and commercial grower in the world
Personal diminishment — deliberately referring to “Mr. McMurtry” rather than “Dr. McMurtry” after acknowledging he earned the PhD, a well-recognized form of academic disrespect
Numerically implausible claims — asserting a 30× potassium deficiency in sand-grown fruit when the documented leaf tissue data showed 1.7–2.2× differences and the published research explicitly stated no deficiency symptoms were observed
Every individual fact in the smear article was technically true in isolation and false in the meaning attached to it. The combination — true facts attached to false interpretations — is the signature of sophisticated propaganda. It is designed to be difficult to refute quickly because each individual fact is accurate, while the overall impression is a lie.
The Human Cost

Mark McMurtry is now in his seventies, in chronic pain, dependent on opiates. The man who invented a food-production system that could transform food security in the world’s most vulnerable regions is spending his final years not seeing his technology feed the world, but fighting online against anonymous trolls and commercial operators whose business models depend on his failure.
His doctoral advisors told him in 1990 that he should bill at least $300 per hour for his expertise — equivalent to approximately $745 today. He chose instead to make his technology open-source, to travel the world presenting it to anyone who would listen, and to fight his own university’s attempts to sell his work to agribusiness.
Thirty-five years later, the technology remains buried.
The open-source community that maintains it is small, unfunded, and under constant attack from commercial operators. They have no corporate legal department. No budget for platform moderation. No institutional voice to match the commercial interests arrayed against them. They defend the science in their spare time, enduring profound psychological abuse, doxxing, the targeted desecration of their deceased friends, and the weaponization of their personal tragedies.

This is not merely a story about academic politics and commercial malfeasance. It is a story about what was lost when a validated food production technology was buried for four decades.

What would the world look like if iAVs had been adopted at scale in the 1990s? The Jericho project alone would have demonstrated the viability of the technology at a scale sufficient to feed a million people in one of the world’s most water-stressed and food-insecure regions. Success at Jericho would have established a replicable model for arid-region food production across the Middle East, North Africa, the Sahel, and beyond.
Instead, Jericho was killed by a senator doing the bidding of a foreign government. The Speraneo gravel variant — a degraded, broken version of the system — became the global standard. The UVI raft paradigm captured academic authority. The equipment industry built itself around the deficiencies of the dominant systems, selling the supplementation, filtration, and monitoring products that iAVs rendered unnecessary.
For forty years, practitioners have struggled with pH crashes, nutrient deficiencies, fish mortality, and the 69% commercial failure rate documented in aquaponics surveys. They have spent thousands on supplementation kits, biofilter media, aeration hardware, and consulting fees — purchasing solutions to problems that iAVs was designed not to have.
For forty years, development organizations have promoted gravel-based “aquaponics” to food-insecure populations — systems that require imported equipment, ongoing chemical inputs, and technical expertise to maintain — while the low-tech, locally-buildable, zero-input iAVs methodology remained invisible.
Why They Did It
Understanding what these people have endured requires understanding why they volunteered in the first place.
iAVs was never a business. It was a humanitarian mission. The technology was deliberately placed in the public domain. It was designed for people who cannot afford commercial aquaponics equipment, who cannot access proprietary nutrient supplements, who cannot pay for consulting, who live in regions where water is scarce and electrical grids are unreliable.
The mission statement is embedded in the system’s architecture. Sand is universally available. The pump runs two hours a day on solar power. The system buffers temperature swings through thermal mass. If the pump fails, the plants remain hydrated for hours or days. There are no proprietary parts to replace. No chemical inputs to purchase. No ongoing dependency on any supplier.
This is not a product. It is a tool for food sovereignty.
And that is precisely why it was attacked. Food sovereignty means people don’t need to buy things. The commercial aquaponics industry requires people to keep buying things. The conflict was structural from the beginning.
Why You Need to Help
The volunteers who have defended iAVs for decades are not going to be here forever. Mark McMurtry’s health is failing. The community is small. The opposition is well-funded, well-organized, and relentless.

They need reinforcements. Not because the science is weak — the science is strong. Not because the technology is unproven — it has been proven for forty years. They need reinforcements because the asymmetrical warfare being waged against them can only be won by numbers.
When a hundred sock-puppet accounts are deployed to overwhelm a discussion forum, a handful of volunteers cannot out-type them. When commercial entities have marketing budgets and the open-source project has nothing, the commercial message reaches more people. When industry associations have conferences and trade shows and the iAVs advocates have a website they maintain in their spare time, the industry narrative dominates.
This is not a fair fight. It is not designed to be a fair fight. The people who profit from the dominant paradigm have every incentive to ensure iAVs remains invisible, and the most effective way to ensure invisibility is to exhaust the people trying to make it visible.
The question is not whether the technology works. The question is whether people who care about food sovereignty, water conservation, open-source science, and the integrity of agricultural research are willing to get involved in sufficient numbers to overcome the forces arrayed against it.
The evidence of forty years suggests that the forces of suppression will win by default unless the equation changes. The equation changes when more people show up.
What You Can Actually Do
Learn the science. The iAVs Advanced Guide (450 pages, distilling a decade of NCSU research) and the Fundamentals Guide (21 pages) are freely available at iavs.info. Read them. Understand the difference between what the commercial industry teaches and what the peer-reviewed research actually demonstrated.
Build it. Stop debating and start growing. Build an iAVs system to the published specifications. Document your results. Share them publicly. Every operational system producing food without supplements, without pH management, without clogging, is a data point the harassers cannot dismiss.
Defend the record. When you see misinformation about sand-based systems — the “sand clogs” myth, the “silicosis” fabrication, the claim that iAVs requires supplementation — correct it. Link to the primary sources. The harassers rely on the exhaustion of the advocates. Every new voice that enters the conversation reduces the burden on the existing volunteers.
Translate and disseminate. iAVs was designed for food-insecure populations in developing regions. Translate the guides into languages spoken in arid and resource-constrained regions. Share the methodology with development organizations, agricultural extension programs, and community food projects. The institutional gatekeepers ignored iAVs for forty years. Bypass them.
Contribute time, skills, or resources. The open-source project needs web developers, technical writers, data analysts, legal support, and anyone willing to help maintain documentation, moderate forums, or provide technical support to new practitioners. Contact the team through iavs.info.
Hold institutions accountable. Ask the Aquaponics Association why its educational materials omit the foundational NCSU research. Ask university aquaculture programs why they don’t teach sand-based integrated systems. Ask FAO why Technical Paper 589 excluded the most thoroughly researched methodology in the field while its authors profited from the exclusion. Institutional silence is maintained by the absence of public pressure.
Protect the volunteers. If you see harassment of iAVs advocates on forums, report it. If you see platform moderation being applied asymmetrically, document it. The legal complaints filed by iAVs advocates have established the framework for holding platforms accountable, but enforcement requires community vigilance.
This Is Bigger Than Aquaponics
This is about whether an open-source agricultural technology — validated by a decade of university research, documented in peer-reviewed publications, demonstrated at scale, deliberately placed in the public domain to serve the world’s most vulnerable people — can survive the coordinated assault of commercial interests who profit from its invisibility.
If iAVs cannot survive, then no open-source agricultural technology can survive. The lesson for anyone who invents a better way to feed people without extracting rent from them will be clear: keep it to yourself, or watch it get buried.
That is not a lesson we can afford to let stand.
The volunteers who have carried this technology for forty years did not ask for this fight.
They asked to feed people.
They have been answered with erasure, harassment, and the desecration of their dead.
