Using the correct type of sand is crucial for iAVs success. The sand must be:
- Chemically inert: It should not react with water or alter the system’s pH.
- Free of contaminants: Avoid sand with silt, clay, salts, heavy metals, or organic matter, which can clog the system or introduce harmful substances.
- Proper grain size: Medium to coarse sand (0.4 mm to 1.2 mm) provides optimal drainage and aeration.
Crystalline quartz sand, also known as silica sand, is generally the best choice for iAVs. It is chemically stable, pH-neutral, and has excellent drainage properties.
