You can grow virtually anything in iAVs including fruit trees and root crops.

In this section, it states:
“A wide range of plant species can be successfully grown in iAVs including vegetables, fruits, herbs, and grains. In order to ensure a full spectrum of nutrient removal, it is recommended to have 50% fruiting plants.”It then provides an extensive list of examples of plants that do well in iAVs, categorized by type:
Leafy greens and herbs
Legumes
Fruits and berries
Root vegetables
Other vegetables
Melons
Grains
Other plants—
