What is the purpose of the furrows?
The furrows do three things:
- They ensure rapid distribution of water around the biofilter.
- They keep the plant crowns above the water (thereby avoiding rot).
- They function as ventilation “stacks”…providing for gaseous exchange in the bed – once the detritus layer is in place.
For horticultural row crops, normal furrows are appropriate.
For smaller buckets and tubs, plant into a mound – or some other arrangement – that accommodates these three roles.
The need to keep the plant crowns above the water is the principal determinant of the depth of the furrows.
