Hello, I’m going to start my first big sandponics build. I’m planning on converting a raised bed as my biofilter. It’s a pretty big build with cinder blocks and cement, it holds soil but I’m wondering if anymore reinforcement will be necerssary when swapping the soil out for sand.

My thinking is sand is heavier than soil and the constant weight change might cause problems over time. Like having a fish tank on a uneven surface; over time it can cause pressure on the glass which could break later (I’ve experienced this first hand with a big tank breaking months later).

Any advice or words of encouragement would be appreciated for this BIG project.

Construction is not my specialty, it may be worth posting the question in a handyman group unless someone else can offer some advice.

How long is the bed? Can you add some rebar for support?

It’s around 3m, in the course it’s recommend to add braces after 2.4m but since it’s cement cinder blocks I feel like being slightly longer would still be fine. I could add rebar to the sides I suppose not sure how effective it would be.

Hi everyone. I’m Rafael from Houston. Have some experience with Aquaponics, but just starting my learning experience with IAVS. Looking forward to it!
