  • Does Sand clog?

Sand usually doesn’t block up in well-designed and properly managed iAVs.

Here are the main points about sand blocking in iAVs:

    – The right type of sand for iAVs, especially when used with furrows and regular watering, doesn’t tend to clog.

    – The system uses coarse sand, which has bigger particles (between 0.4mm and 1.2mm). This allows water to drain quickly.

    – It’s important to use the recommended type and size of sand, ensuring it contains no silt or clay.

    – If the right sand isn’t used, problems like clogging, poor drainage, and areas without oxygen can happen.

    – Features like good drainage, large pore spaces, slightly sloped grow beds, a drying period of 90 minutes, and a lot of microbes help keep oxygen levels high and avoid areas without oxygen.

    – Instead of moving down, solids shift horizontally on the sand’s surface, preventing sand and drain outlets from getting blocked.

    – Some systems have been successfully running for 20 years without any clogging issues.

    – The sand needs to drain thoroughly to keep plants from getting too wet.

Not if you have the right sizes. If you use very fine sand such as the play sand, yes. I started with play sand but later on changed to the right sizes of sand.
